ROCK(ies) & ROLL

It happened. The incredible run continues. The Colorado Rockies are going to the playoffs for just the second time in franchise history. They will face the Philadelphia Phillies in what promises to be an interesting series, as both teams are extremely hot right now.

Last night in an extra regular season game that definitely held the playoff atmosphere, the Colorado Rockies continued this dream ride they have been on for the past 15 games. Winning 14 out of their last 15 games the Rockies squeaked into a tie with the San Diego Padres for the wild card spot in the playoffs. Monday night they proved that the deserved it. In extra innings the Rockies took care of business when Matt Holliday walked up to the plate, hit a triple, and then dashed for home just in time on a sacrifice fly on the next play. Needless to say there was a mile-high celebration last night after the game.

In the next few days, and maybe long thereafter, there will be much talk about, Matt Holliday's score. Did he touch the plate? Well, I for one don't care at this point. The game is over, they are not going to reverse the call that the official made now, and so its stupid to continue talking about it, if you ask me. Let the Rockies have their 15 minutes of fame. I think they have earned it, don't you?

I agree. They deserve to be in the playoffs. The Padres have a great team, and they played their hearts out last night, but the Rockies have been stellar as of late, and should be fun to watch in the postseason.

Like I said in a previous comment, I am pumped to see the Rox and Phils in a series. They are going to slug it out. I can't even call a winner.

yeah I agree. It's a very tough call. A clash of the two hottest teams in baseball. But just for fun, I say Phils in 5.

I says Rox in 5.

I think the Rockies momentum will run out, dropping them off their high and losing in 4 games. The Phillies pitching is better right now in my opinion, but who knows--we'll see!

It was a good game, but it showed how weak the National League really is. All of the mistakes in that game were unbelievable...from the Padres center fielder to Matt Holliday's misplay in left and his dive into the plate...but, from a pure fans perspective, it was fun to watch.

Yeah it doesn't matter if he really touched the plate or not b/c the Rockies will be packing their bags in 5 games anyway!

After last night the Rockies could really go far in the postseason. I've seen this before. A wildcard team gains huge momentum, and that momentum continues to build through the postseason. Like the Angels, when they were the wildcard, and the Red Sox when they beat the Yankees in four games straight and then swept the Cards in the WS. The Phillies want it really bad though. Its going to be a great series, prob the best DS of the 4.

Nice blog Ryan.

I agree it doesn't really matter whether Holiday touched the plate or not, the Rockies are in, period.

But what DOES matter is that if he didn't touch the plate it could've been San Diego heading to Philly instead, which would've meant a much tougher series for the Phillies. Think of it from the Padres' perspective, I'd dare say it won't make the Pads feel any better to see the Rockies go home early. THEY want to be there.

Either way, the Padres had plenty of chances to seal the deal on the Wildcard. And they can't blame one bad call in the tiebreaker game.

Yeah. I mean we could sit here and talk about what might have been in if the Pads had won. I do think they would have provided a bigger challenge to the Phils than Colorado does, on paper. In real life though, I feel like the momentum that the Rox are riding right now has the potential to continue at least through the first couple games. If they can get a split in Philly I think it will go 5 games.

Awesome blog Ryan, I'm hoping for the Phil's to win the series. They really came back from a huge deficit to win this one. What an upset!

I despise the Phillies, so I'm pleased with any team opposing them. Colorado has risen to the top this season because of talent and hard work--not the controversy last night. One sketchy call doesn't negate their previous success. Besides, the San Diego coach himself said Holliday was safe . . . and S.D. lost their last three games. Colorado earned their rank. Rockies: 9, Phillies: 5

Okay, so what are everybody's picks for the playoff matchups?

Here's a stat for ya. The Yankees are in their 13 consecutive post season. The other 7 teams...not a single one even made it to the playoffs last year.

Predictions:

National League
Phil 3 - Col 1
(Rockies luck runs out)

Cubs 3 - Arz 2
(Cubs veterans get it done)

American League
NYY 3 - Clev 2
(Come on, it's the Yankees)

RSox 3 - LAA 0
(Can't win with a banged up Vladi, and no Matthews Jr.)

I will take the:

Phils over the Rox in 5

Cubs over the Snakes in 4

BoSox over the Halos in 4

as much as I hate to say it

Pinstripes over the Tribe in 5

American League
BOS/ANA
Sox sweep

NYY/CLE
Yanks in 5 (should be a great series)

National League
PHI/COL
Phils in 5 (a slugfest series)

CHI/ARI
Cubbies in 4

Disclaimer(s)
- Yes, I am a Yankees fan so of course I pick them. Nonetheless, I say experience and a very potent lineup wins out against an extremely good Cleveland team.

- I have a very hard time picking between the Phillies and the Rockies. What a series this will be. Even as I write the Phillies are rallying in the fifth behind two back to back homers from Aaron Rowand and Pat Burrell. Both of these teams are very very hot and have the momentum in their favor. But something's gotta give and I say the Phillies' lineup beats Colorado's.
